D2 men VS. Morris October 13, 2018

Posted on 10/22/2018 12:37:45 PM by Mike Dombrowski |   Return To Blog

Muddy field conditions greeted the D2 Mudturtles as they hoped to defeat Morris RFC for the second time this season. With their previous matchup decided in the final minutes, Union knew that they had to make a strong statement from the opening whistle in order to add a sixth win to their tally.

For the first twenty minutes of the match, both teams seemed pretty evenly matched. The Mudturtles and the Lions attacked each other’s defensive lines, probing to find weaknesses. Eventually, Union would strike first, with fullback Tyler Ringwood stepping his way through the Morris defense and diving into the try zone. However, Morris would strike back three minutes later and even the score 5-5.

The Mudturtles would surge back ten minutes later. Similar to the opening of floodgates, Hunter Lostan and Chris Herron added three tries to the Union score line in the course of five minutes and, with Mike Ehrlich slotting all three conversions, led the match 26-5. For the rest of the second half, Morris was held without points due to strong pressure defense from the Mudturtles, with Union players making numerous tackles behind the gain line or forcing errors from the Lions.

As the second half began, this strong style of defense paid off, and Ringwood was able to capitalize and score his second try of the day, putting the score at 31-5. However, a few unlucky penalties created opportunities for Morris to counter the strong Union play. They did so in the 54th minute, crashing over the line for a try. With the kick converted, the Lions bridged the gap 31-12.

Both teams continued to trade blows, with Morris fighting hard to come back in front of a home crowd. However, their efforts went unanswered, as the continued staunch defense of the Mudturtles kept them out of the try zone. As the Mudturtles marched the ball down the field, Bobby Mroz took a crash ball off of a ruck and, leaping for the try zone, dotted the ball down before being shoved out of bounds. Ehrlich converted the try, and the score widened to 38-12 in favor of Union.

With their last effort, Morris was able to score one more try at the 75th minute, and the score became 38-19. However, the Lions would not have the last say in the match; Dylan Frank ran a beautiful line, exposing a huge gap in Morris defensive line and, carrying several defenders with him, fell into the try zone for the last score of the day. With the kick slotted, the final score of the game was 45-19 in favor of the Mudturtles.

The man of the match for the D2 match was Chris Herron, who was promoted to be a starter shortly before the game began. His fantastic support lines and strong smashing runs created two tries for Union.

Division 2 travels to play PAC Rugby next weekend.
