D3 Men VS North Jersey October 6, 2018

Posted on 10/12/2018 2:23:03 PM by Mike Dombrowski |   Return To Blog

The D3 Mudturtles traveled to Fair Lawn on Saturday to take on North Jersey RFC. Last year, the Mudturtles edged out NoJo to go on to the playoffs, and they hoped to repeat their success.

The rain made for a tough game for both respective sides. Multiple knock-ons and ensuing scrums were traded between teams. However, North Jersey struck first, with hard physical runs that broke through the Mudturtle defensive line. They would repeat this process three more times during the half, scoring on opportunistic turnovers and repeatedly smashing the line. Nevertheless, Union knew that the game was far from over, and as the halftime whistle blew, the team retreated to ramp up their game plan.

NoJo struck first to begin the second half, adding to an already large deficit that Union would try to overcome. At the 42nd minute, North Jersey lead the match 31-0. However, Union began to bash North Jersey with their forwards, sending wave after wave of crash ball into their defensive line. The Mudturtles marched down the field, with key carries from Chris Herring, Joe Palamara, and Pete Wargo. Eight minutes later, Mike Dombrowski picked the ball off of a ruck and pushed his way over the line for the first Union score of the day. Darren Robertson slotted the kick, slightly lessening the gap 31-7.

The Mudturtles continued this method of play, but NoJo score twice more in the ensuing twenty minutes, putting the score at 43-7. Despite the match being all but over, Union continued to fight. On their opponents’ five-meter line, the pack pushed NoJo off, and Dombrowski picked the ball out of the scrum, breaking two tackles before diving over the line for the Mudturtles’ second score. Robertson converted the try, and the match ended with a final score of 43-14.

The man of the match for the Mudturtles was Chris Jessen for outstanding play in the backline and great tackling which not only boosted defense but also team morale. D3 travels for another away game next weekend, this time at Morris RFC.
