Lady Mudturtles Host GIRLS ONLY - Tackle Clinic

Posted on 10/8/2018 6:20:50 PM by Lera Skoldpadda |   Return To Blog

Union Rugby, in conjunction with Rugby NJ, hosted a girls-only youth tackle clinic on Saturday drawing 20 middle and high school girls to Unami Park. This was the second in a series of clinics with the goal to grow the game for U14 and U12 girls in New Jersey, and the first ever clinic hosted by Union women! Players came from Union, Morris, Bridgewater, and as far as Jersey Shore rugby club! After warm up, players were led through tackling fundamentals by volunteers from Union Women. They then moved on to a more aggressive tackling drill in triangles and a 5x5 grid. The girls (and Union women) enjoyed a joint game of “ultimate rugby” to work on passing and spacing on the pitch. The clinic finished with the beloved “sausage race” where players put together all of the tackling techniques they learned and raced to see which “team” can tackle the sausage pads across the width of the field faster. Players were able to tackle full speed for the first time!! We finished the day awarding prizes to players who improved the most on the day, the most aggressive tacklers, and players who could answer questions about tackling form and the game of rugby. The Lady Mudturtles enjoyed sharing their rugby stories with the girls, many of whom had never played before womSaturday.

Thank you again to Rugby NJ and to all the coaches, volunteers, and parents who value rugby for their daughters. Special thanks also to our photographer Michael Longchamp, who took some great shots to commemorate the day.
