The Battle of Mud Island

Posted on 10/6/2018 10:23:58 PM by Lera Skoldpadda |   Return To Blog

Despite a back and forth offensive show, the Lady Mudturtles eventually dropped the contest to the Long Island ladies. LI started off the match with a quick try from the backline. Union answered back, working upfield and utilizing Sonya Rosebrock”s strong drive to gain momentum. 8-man Abby Holmes took an inside pass over the tryline at the 15 minute mark. Steffi Villagomez was good on the conversion. Shortly after, Julie Buonaguro scored her first ever try up the sideline, set up by a well-timed pass from captain, Victoria Steele. Scrumhalf Scrumhalf Anna Gildea also dotted over the line, sneaking around an ill-protected ruck. Down 24-17 at the half and playing on the heated turf field in the late afternoon, the turtles knew they would have to put up a fight for the next 40. Unfortunately, the effort was not enough, and Long Island remained on top for the rest of the match.

Woman of the Match, Steffi, took over kicking duties for the day, placing her kickoffs high and deep. Steffi also crossed over the tryline in the second half, breaking through a gap off a penalty. She converted her own try. Abby Holmes, the Ninja Turtle of the day, smashed everything in sight, did a great job when at first receiver, and helped us maintain possession. Flanker, Crystal Cooke, followed Olivia Kinder with great support, and took a pop pass over the line when Olivia was tackled in open space. It was the first match for new Mudturtle, front-rower Crystal AHearn and the first ever match for Danielle Schubert, who is new to rugby, but an extremely speedy addition to our backline.

Lady Mudturtles fall to 1-3 on the season. With the upcoming bye week, the next matchup will be away at Morris on October 13 at 11am.
