Youth Tackle Sponsorship Opportunities
Good morning, As we prepare for the 5th Annual Bob Scheurer Memorial Winter Classic on December 15th, and the broader Tackle season this Spring, we wanted to make an ask of all Mudturtles. The Youth Tackle program does everything it can to run at the lowest cost possible to our players. We want to expand opportunities for the kids in our area, and sometimes that means operating at a loss. Sponsorships are a big help to the organization in managing our operating costs while keeping season dues low. The Youth Tackle program as a whole is always seeking sponsorships, and has the ability to accept sponsorship funding through a non-profit corporation account, which makes any sponsorship a tax deductible donation. FREE Rugby Skills Clinic 11/9 ,11/16
Hello, We are hosting a FREE Rugby skills clinic This Saturday 11/9 & next Saturday 11/16 from 10-12 at Unami Park Cranford. BE ON TIME (15 minutes early) cleats on and ready to work! The skills clinic is free, but all participants MUST BE REGISTERED WITH USA RUGBY (see link below) we strongly suggest all current and future players attend. No experience necessary. Please try and make both clinics. Please make sure your player is registered, has a mouthguard, and water. Cleats are strongly suggested. Mudturtle 50th Day Saturday October 12 at Unami
Remember this Saturday October 12 at Unami Park will be "50th DAY" to celebrate 50 years of Union County rugby. Saturday October 5 Unami Park
Come out this Saturday October 5 at Unami Park to support your Mudturtles. The day starts at 11:00 when the women kick off against their biggest rival Long Island. Our ladies went undefeated on the recent UK tour chalking up two wins and have been rolling since. Show up early and watch some impressive rugby. Following the women our men will kick off at 1:00 against Central Jersey. A full day of rugby in Unami, put on your Union swag and come cheer both sides.
High School Tour
This is just an informative email to gauge some interest, I want to give everyone the broad strokes of a plan I am working on for this Spring. 1 month ago, the Union Adult program went on an International Tour to England. This was, absolutely, my last time playing competitively. On hanging up the boots, I got a little nostalgic about all the fun I've been able to have on tour over my playing career. It got me thinking that it is one of the biggest pieces missing from the High School game. Morris and Union have had some great success in the last few years with mixing sides on day trips to play higher level teams, and it has brought the players from both programs closer together. Their matches against each other have never been harder fought, but they are also some of the best shows of sportsmanship I've ever seen. I believe that being able to play together so many times in the last few years has done a lot of the work in building the foundation of these positive relationships. My plan is to support both of these ideas to continue growing the sport in our area. I want to bring a true "tour" to the High School players, and I want to keep it open to any player in NJ that is interested to help continue building the positive relationships amongst the players. The broad strokes, as I've planned them so far: - What: Washington DC Cherry Blossom Tournament - When: Waiting on confirmation, TENTATIVELY 4/12-4/13 - Tour Dates: 4/11-4/14 - Tour Cost: In the range of $350-$500, final cost to be dependant on a few factors yet to be confirmed - What's Included: - Tournament fee - Tour Kit, players to KEEP (jersey, shorts, socks) - Lodging - Breakfast - Friday night team dinner - A day sightseeing the monuments in DC - Not included: - Travel, unfortunately. Due to liability concerns, any player participating will need to secure their own travel to DC, the fields, and into the city for sightseeing. I wanted to include this, to keep things easy on people, but charter buses are wildly expensive, and for such a close and short trip, it didn't make sense. So, for a first go at this, I want it to be as affordable and accessible as possible. I know those dates won't work for everyone, but it's when the tournament (likely) is and it's during some school Spring Breaks. After last year, Union is planning on building Bye Weeks around when our player's school Spring Breaks split between. I hope it works for enough people outside of Union who are interested. Despite semi-planning this around Union's schedule, this team will not be a Union Mudturtle team nor will it be a Rugby NJ team. This will be a standalone team in the vein of the Atlantis Invitational Sides. However, where the goal of Atlantis is to go to tournaments and win at all costs, the goal of this team is to introduce our High School players to the broader culture of rugby; to get them traveling, meeting other players and programs, and having fun while we do it. If we win a few times along the way, it's a bonus, but it isn't the primary goal. To this end, the commitment will be minimal. IF a practice or two can be planned prior to the tournament, we'll do it, but it won't be mandatory attendance. A spot on the team will be open to anyone who wants to experience a rugby tour, it's not an invitational side, it's an open side. If this is something you think you or your player(s) would be interested in, please reply to this email and let me know. I'm going to continue planning everything, and will keep an interest list to follow up with as tour information becomes more solidified. Feel free to email with any questions as well! Hello, We will be hosting a free CO-ED youth Rugby clinic 10/5/24 from 11am -12;30 @ Unami park Cranford. This is a GREAT opportunity to come out and give tackle Rugby a TRY! no experience necessary. Rugby NJ is looking for certified officials to referee at the 2024 Fall 7's Series. They are in dire straits and do not have enough referees for this weekend or moving forward. For the remainder of the season men's club practices will be held from 7-9pm at Migliaro Field (430 Westfield Ave, Clark, NJ, 07066). We will continue our Tues/Thurs schedule. Men's Fall Rugby
Gents, I hope everyone is having a great summer! We are about a week away from the CanAm tournament in Lake Placid, and with the AGM following on August 7th, we wanted to provide a few reminders heading into next week. We will have two formal practices before CanAm, next Monday and Wednesday at 6pm at Unami. Even if you are not going up, please make an effort to come to practice and help us prepare. Next week we will not hold regular touch on Tues/Thurs due to the practices. The AGM is mandatory for all current members. See you the Cranford Community Center (220 Walnut Ave, Cranford, NJ) at 7pm on Wednesday, August 7th. Practices will begin the week after the AGM, on August 13th. Our first game is September 7th. Tomorrow Saturday July 20 is Mudturtle Flagfest at Madison Ave Park in Rahway. 1333 Madison Ave, behind the hospital. All are encouraged to come out and cheer on our future Mudturtles. There will also be an adults Myths VS Legends (MVL) flag game at the end of the Fest. All Mudturtles are invited to join in on the fun. MVL legends shirts will be available for $20 each, arrive early to get you shirt. MVL game starts after all flag games are over which is 11:30 to noonish in rugby time. There will also be a beer garden which opens during the MVL game and will stay open afterwards. Don't miss out this is always a great event which puts the fun into rugby.

Cranford Flag - Final Week Schedule
Thanks to all that braved the weather for a fun, but wet day, in Bayonne. So as we enter the final week of the season, here is the schedule. TUESDAY - Practice as usual THURSDAY - Fun Practice. Please have your kids wear their uniforms as we have a fun evening planned for the final practice. Parents, it is time to take the field and play against your own kids! We will do team pictures, a parent-kid game, and end with the traditional egg toss and ice pops. SATURDAY - Flag Fest in Rahway (please update your GameChanger availability)... featuring a tackle demonstration, all girls game, and myths vs. legends game. Rahway does a great job hosting with a grill station, ample snacks, and entertainment. See you all this week!

Volunteers Needed
Union County Mudturtles will be hosting coaching clinics this summer and in need of volunteers! We will be hosting a Level 1 Coaching course Sunday, July 14th from 8:30 AM until 5 PM at the Clark Rec Center and a Level 2 Coaching Course Saturday and Sunday. August 10-11th 8 AM to 5 PM. Volunteers will not be needed for the whole day, just 2-3 hours for practicals. Cranford Flag Rugby - Week of 6/17
Cranford Flag Parents, Happy Father’s Day! Saturday was a great day for rugby. The weather was perfect and all the teams played really well at our home meet. It is great to see the hard work they are putting in at practice showing up on the field during game day. A big thank you to all the parents for supporting your children and our coaches this weekend! A few of things to note for this coming week: 1) It is going to be hot. We are going to be monitoring the weather forecasts and air quality closely. We ask that you send your children with extra water this week as we anticipate having less strenuous practices and more frequent water breaks. If we deem the weather too hazardous for practice, we will send out notifications via text, email, and GameChanger if practice is cancelled by 5PM to give you ample notice. 2) We are playing Saturday (6/22) at Bridgewater at the Crim Road Soccer Fields which are directly across the street from Crim School (Use 1300 Crim Road, Bridgewater for navigation). If there is a change to the schedule (starting earlier, etc.) we will send out another mass notification. 3) To maximize everyone’s playing time and game day experience, we ask that you please update your child’s availability on GameChanger by Wednesday evening so we can accurately submit the number of teams we are entering for Saturday’s game day. We want the children to be on the field as much as possible and not on the sidelines! 4) Lastly, we encourage you and your children to invite a friend to come practice this week to give flag rugby a try. Please have any guest’s parents see Coach Ray to fill out a waiver before they hit the pitch. All they need is a pair of cleats or sneakers and a water bottle! Hello Flag Families!! As some of you know at our last tournament of the season we have a Girls Rule game and the girls who play get a shirt for that special match. This year we are asking the girls to submit there design ideas for the the Girls Rule t-shirts and the winning design will be printing on the match shirts for Flag Fest on 7/20. Any girl who plays flag rugby can submit a design! Designs must be submitted no lated then Wednesday June 26th. They can be submitted to Jessica Blessing at jessieb.mk@gmail.com. Welcome all to another season for Mudturtle Flag Rugby!! We would like to take a moment to remind all parents and guardians that there is no world cup of flag rugby. Flag rugby is for the players to run around and have fun. Please take a moment to review the Mudturtle Code of Rugby on the link below. In rugby we respect our opponents, referees, and all volunteers as without them we have no game. We especially like to remind all that our referees are the same kids who played flag in the past few years. Yes, calls may not be made, mistakes may happen, so when this does occur just let the game "play on". We do work each week with the refs, in particular the new ones, to train them in different aspects of the game so all can improve. If you do see an area in which we can improve please bring it to your program's head person. They will pass along to our referee committee. Thanks and let's all have a fun summer!!!!!!

Greetings to all Mudturtles, This is our 50th Anniversary week golf outing this coming Friday June 7 and Gala Saturday June 8. Attached is an availability doc for summer 7s season and a brief 15's window before the Saranac Can-Am tournament in late July. Please fill out the form even if you are only attending trainings and can't make the tournaments. End of SPRING Season
Good afternoon, Our U12/U14 teams just finished their last games today, our High School sides last week, signaling the official end of our Spring season. Thanks to the KIDS they worked hard! I just wanted to take a minute and thank all of our Parents for volunteering by bringing food and helping out at games. Your generosity is always appreciated, THANK YOU! I especially want to thank our coaching staff who are all volunteers and do what they do because of their love of the game and our club. They are all there week in and week out donating their time and passing on their knowledge to all of our kids. THANK YOU, COACHES!!! TREE, JOHN, ANNA, BOGDAN, NEIL, RALPH, ARIES, CARLOS, DANIEL, JACO, ROB, and DAN M. You all did a fantastic job this year! Parents please sign your kids up for flag Rugby (K-8 Grade) which will be starting soon, we have an amazing flag Rugby program. Take a look at the MANY Rugby camps that are available this summer. An email went out not long ago that listed them all. Please have the kids watch RUGBY as often as possible. Watching it they will learn more about the game. Watch it with them... Good morning, The club is hosting a Level 1 Coaching Course in Clark on 7/14/24. This is the minimum requirement to be a certified Head Coach of a tackle program. If you are interested in becoming a certified coach, please consider registering as this is the closest course you will find. SUMMER CAMPS
​ Good Morning, Some of you may be aware that in addition to the High School Head Coach, I am also Club President of "The Big Turtle". The Turtle is currently working to set aside some funds for players who would like to attend a camp or clinic this summer to help supplement the cost to the parents. It's only a good thing that the players get to participate in a wider range of experiences, and we want as many people as possible to attend camps in the summer. With this being the first time we are implementing this, we are unsure of the exact amount we can offer, but we are fairly certain we will be able to offer something. This is open to all tackle players, from U14 - U18, including graduating Seniors. Please consider taking advantage of this opportunity, especially if you were on the fence about sending your player. Mudturtle Day at Unami Park Saturday April 13
Good things happened for the Mudturtles this past weekend. The men went to South Jersey posting a 44-19 win. The women went to and secured their first ever victory over Morris!!! This weekend Saturday April 13 is a full day at Unami with the Ladies B side playing Montclair U at 11:00, followed by the Men D3 kicking off against Brooklyn at 1:00 and D4 kicking off against Bayonne at 3:00. We encourage all Mudturtles to come out and support lets fill up Unami Park!! Also do not forget to first drop by the Mudturtle car wash that is being run by our youth tackle program. Men's Practice Tonight
Gents, Thanks for the solid showing over the weekend. You boys played tough and gutted out terrible weather against a higher division playoff team. Up 10-3 at the half, I gave Monmouth back their red card loss of player and soon after our front row went down with injuries. You boys didn't give in and even after losing some backrow players and scrumhalf, you still gutted it out for a full 80 minutes. We came up short 28-10 but this baseline test was very productive. We have things to work on and improve, but we have even more to build off of. We need to finish trys, we need to finish tackles, we left 3 trys off the board with poor skills under pressure meters from the try line. Best part is all of this is easily fixable. We need everyone out at training. Tonight we will focus on skill work to begin with then progress and focus on rucking, scrums, line-outs, counter-attack, and bring it all together for a semi-opposed run through seeing players at different positions. We need everyone at training, we need all hands on deck. If you were only planning on coming Thursday please make every effort to be there tonight. Competition breeds success. Greetings, To celebrate our 50th Anniversary the club will tour to England. The time has finally come to begin collecting deposits for our trip this August! Below is a link for the clubs 50th anniversary page. On this page you will find a link showing tour details and another to make your initial deposit of $500. If you are ready to go and would like to secure your spot, submit your initial deposit. Once you register, a member of the Tour Committee will reach out to you to confirm your details including any guests, rooming, and kit sizes. 2023 Unions Men's Wrap Up
Good Afternoon Gents, Just wanted to send out a quick wrap up on our season. It was a year that started off with the clubs foundation rocked with departures, discipline and turnover. You all bought in to the new systems and laid a solid foundation for the club to flourish for the foreseeable future. The core of this team is rock solid and I look forward to a spirited spring season where we build on our success and write another chapter in Unions rich history. Hopefully, we welcome back some of those that were not with us this year after hearing of all your successes! Thank you to Coach Taranto, Coach Erickson and Coach Smith for making this season a success. There is no more practice this season, but stay tuned for information about touch sessions to this fall into winter. We will put together a competitive and fun spring that will see us tested in preparation for Fall 24'. Please stay the course, recruit mates and remember always be the hammer not the nail. A full day of rugby in Unami Park Saturday October 7. The women kick off against White Plains at 11:00, the men D3 side then faces New Haven at 1:00. Finishing up the day will be the men D4 at 3:00 versus North Jersey. The Mudturtle Christmas village will also be open. For sale will be club ties, supporter scarves, club blankets, and plushies. Get you xmas shopping done early.
Biggest Challenge of Season
Men, You are playing great rugby, wearing your heart on your sleeve and leaving it all on the pitch. This week we will stay away from contact in training and work on pattern of play. We need all available hands on deck, we are playing to retain sole position of first place without 5-6 starters. We will not be deterred, we shall draw the line in the sand and hold the line, controlling what we can control and that is our defense. I need every player to attend training tonight, we need to put the best foot forward and assemble a team that can withstand the upcoming obstacle and continue carving our path of success. Thursday's training will be at Rutgers, making tonight very important for us to run through our pattern of play. Remember early is on-time and on-time is late. For the Club, Coach DeLucia

Gents, You've played inspiring rugby this season. You've overcome incredible odds, large roster turnover and have been incredibly coachable leading to your success. We have played good rugby and hang our hat on high quality defense. You have outscored opponents 90-18 thus far, yet we are far away from achieving our goals of an undefeated season and 1st place in our division. The next two weeks will be the most challenging as we are without 27% of our starting 15 for weddings and the world cup as we compete with Danbury and New Haven for 1st place. Now is not the time to be complacent, we will react-adapt-decide to overcome and not let it slow our aspirations. Next man up mentality, others must rise to the occasion. We will be shuffling different people at 9,10 & 15. If you feel you can play on our top side at any of these positions, please let it be known during training so we may get a proper look at you. Looking forward to getting after it tonight, please come to training, there is only 6-8 trainings left of the season. We need all hands on deck and must continue to develop and play as one. Practice Tonight
Good Afternoon Gents, We need to have a good showing at training tonight, please make every effort to attend. We are playing good rugby, have outscored opponents this season thus far 73-18. If you want to achieve all of our goals of a league championship and a national title run this spring; we need all hands on deck! Tonights focus will be on skills for 30 minutes, we'll split backs and forwards for 20 minutes, then review new penalty plays, counter attacks and kick chase structure while we have a team run through. High School Fall 7s tournament 9/17
Hello, We will be hosting our Fall 7s tournament at Unami Park on Sunday 9/17/23. We will be there early setting up from 7:30 am on through the day until the tournament is over. There is a tremendous amount of work that goes into a tournament like this. We take hosting duties seriously at Union Rugby! There will be over 100 kids playing, a lot of teams , a lot of 7s rugby, and a lot of hungry kids to feed. Rugby at Union County Celtic Fest Saturday Sept 9, 2023
Saturday, September 9th is the First Annual Union County Celtic Festival, hosted at Oak Ridge Park in Clark (136 Oak Ridge Road Clark, NJ 07066). The Festival will be featuring rugby games during the day and the Mudturtles will be involved in ALL of them. This is the the schedule of games: 10:00am - High School Boys 7s 11:00am - Women vs Long Island 1:00pm - Youth Flag 2:00pm - D3 Men vs Morris 4:30pm - D4 Men vs Princeton While players will be admitted to the festival free of charge, there will be a fee for all others. Friends and family can use the following link to get discounted tickets to the festival for $10 rather than $25 at the gate. https://fevogm.com/event/UnionCountyCelticFestivalPiper The code is good through Wednesday, 9/6 at midnight. For $10 the event will be well worth it. There is a lot on the festival grounds but it may be better to operate under the assumption that it will be full. Everyone should expect to park in the overflow area or additional offsite lot so allow a little extra time to arrive. A shuttle will bring us to the game and it isn’t far away. That this is an unfortunate, unavoidable downside to an otherwise awesome event.

Hello, On September 9th 2023 Union County Rugby will be playing Rugby as part of the UNION COUNTY CELTIC FESTIVAL. The festival will be held at Oak Ridge Park in Clark NJ. We need 25 Hawks/Eagles from ANY of our Mudturtle Flag teams, to play one game showcasing our flag rugby program. Slots are filling up quick! Sean MacLaney
Sean MacLaney has been playing rugby for 16 years since he started in First grade with the Westfield Owls. This upcoming weekend, he is playing in the Division1A National Championship game - Navy vs. Cal on May 6, 2023, which can be watch on therugbynetwork at 7:30 pm. During the playoffs, he was voted the "Man of the Match" in Navy's win over Army when Sean lead his team with their opening try of the game.

Youth Flag Rugby Registration Now Open
Spring is here, weather is warming, and Flag Rugby registration is open. Our season starts the week of June 5th, with first games on Saturday, June 10th. The season wraps up Saturday, July 22nd with our annual Flag Fest. We look forward to all joining us for a summer of Flag Rugby and FUN. Register today!

Sorry for the wildly last minute bad news, but I just woke up to an email from Morris that they do not have the numbers for today and have asked to cancel. I'm sorry we'll be dropping a game, but I hope it's time for the bumps and bruises to heal and for you all to have some home time with the boys.

Please note we will be extending the sale in the Mudturtle shop sale till May 15. Tree has acquired samples of the Bomber jackets so people can try them on for size. He will be bringing them to the mens and ladies games this Saturday April 1 so you can see which size fits best.

March with the Mudturtles in the Union County St. Pats parade Saturday March 11 all from our Flag & Tackle programs, Men's & Women's teams, alumni & supporters are welcome. Assemble 11:00 AM in lot across from Boys and Girls club 1050 Jeanette Ave Union. After parade we will assemble at Dowlings in Roselle Park.
Men's Practice Spring 2023
Men's practice for the Spring season starts this week 8:00 at Rahway River Park on Tuesday and Thursday, we will be in Rahway every Tuesday and Thursday until we announce moving to Unami. Be there boots on warmed up and ready to go.
