D2 VS Bayonne October 6, 2018

Posted on 10/11/2018 1:34:16 PM by Mike Dombrowski |   Return To Blog

A slippery field and cloudy weather were just a few of the conditions that the D2 Mudturtles knew would be a factor in their matchup against the Bayonne Bombers. After a narrow defeat to Morris RFC the previous weekend, the Bombers hoped to bounce back and knock off the top-seeded Union side.

Bayonne would strike first, capitalizing on two careless penalties by Union. The Bombers’ flyhalf knocked two penalty kicks through the sticks to put the home side up early 6-0. Despite this early setback, Union would hit back, with Hunter Lostan going over the try line and dotting the ball down at the 16th minute, narrowing the gap 6-5. The conversion would miss, and Union tried to keep the momentum moving forward. However, the Bombers took advantage of another penalty against Union, and they slotted a kick from distance to put the home side up 9-5. With some patient play and smart offloading, Union worked their way down the field, and Chris Sweeney was able to crash over the line for the second Union try of the day, giving the lead to Union 10-9. However, Bayonne answered with a score of their own, which came from a player intercepting the ball and taking it all the way to the try zone. With a conversion put through, Bayonne lead at the half 16-10.

Despite sloppy play in the first half, Union stepped their game up for the latter part of the match. Less than five minutes into the second half, Union broke through the Bayonne defensive line. With clever offloading near the sideline, Tom Ross was put into the open field and dotted down Union’s third try of the match. With Chris Keim punching the conversion through, Union lead the match 17-16 with a half hour to go.

Both sides fought hard to create plays and put their side ahead. However, the Mudturtles proved to be too much for the Bayonne pack, and started to make their presence in scrums known. With much back-and-forth play happening for most of the half, Kevin Menyhart broke off a run into the Bayonne try zone, and added to the score line 22-16. Seven minutes later, replacement forward Dylan Frank crashed over the line for the fifth Union try of the day, putting the final score at 27-16 in favor of the Mudturtles.

The man of the match for D2 was Andy Brown, who did not miss a single line out throw and broke off a huge run that set up one of his teammates for a try. The Mudturtles travel with their D3 side to take on Morris RFC next weekend.
